Though a naturally-occurring physiological phenomenon, menstruation and associated activities are still shroudedin secrecy and taboos here in Nigeria. In some communities, particularly in the rural areas, social restrictions are placed on menstruating females preventing them from participating in normal activities. For instance, they cannotprepare foodorperform certain religious rituals while on their period.
Thanks to the many myths and misconceptions surrounding the subject, young adolescent girls tend to be less prepared for menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and suffer from anxiety, apprehension, shame and fear during their period. Also, women as well as girls in low-income settings have low awareness of hygienic practices. These, and other factors, underline the need for period education (Perioducation).
Perioducation entails all the information and learning that will help make menstrual hygiene management and discussions surrounding it as natural a process as possible for everyone (women and men inclusive), devoid of social judgments about the female body and roles, prioritizing physical and mental health through knowledge of the menstrual cycle and how it affects each person individually. At HUMANx, we are educating the public through:
Using mass media channels and our social media platforms, we are encouraging open and honest discussions on MHM, dispelling myths associated with the subject and empowering young girls and women with valuable information. Join the conversation.
Our intervention entails organisingenlightenment campaigns on MHM for adolescent girls and women in low-income settings. Besides arming them with the right information, more practical, sustainable and culturally acceptable methods for addressing theirmenstrual hygiene requirements are needed due to the financial limitations they face. As such, part of our strategy is to teach them how to make their own reusable pads and use them in a safe manner.
Menstruation necessitates the availability of material resources to absorb or collect menstrual blood, facilitate personal hygiene and dispose of waste, ideally with adequate privacy.
The types of adsorbents used, hygienic practices and cultural restrictions during menstruation are associated with negative clinical and psychosocial outcomes, including reproductive and urinary tract infections, anemia, school/work absenteeism, and social isolation.
Since 2020, the HUMANx fashion brand has maintained a commitment to tackling period poverty and associated problems—each sale unlocking access to better sanitary products for females in rural Nigeria. For sustainability, our strategy also involvesteaching them how to make their own reusable pads and how to use them in a safe manner.
To effectively combat period poverty, collaborative and decisive action is required against:
We are aware that there are already forces for change to help make this desire a reality, as evidenced by the work being done across communities.
At HUMANx,we welcome partnerships and collaborations with interested parties (individuals, local and international NGOs, religious groups, civil society organisations, relevant state and federal agencies, sanitary products manufacturers, and the organized private sector etc.)
